Bowen for Babies

Baby Bowen consists of a series of moves specifically formulated for babies suffering fom colic.  The treatment has a high success rate for relieving colic and the colic is often resolved after just 1 visit.

I first attended Sam's clinic when I was pregnant with my son and suffering with back pain. After one treatment I experienced immediate relief and after a follow up appointment, the pain, which had been present for months, never returned. When my son Harry was born he sufffered with colicky pains, waking him up every hour and a half throughout the night, so I decided to take him to see Sam for Bowen threapy. After one treatment, the results were instantaneous, Harry was able to get rid of his wind more easily and immediately began sleeping for six to eight hour stretches at night. Harry thoroughly enjoyed the treatment as Sam has such a wonderful manner with babies and I have to say Harry loved her! I can highly recommend Sam and Bowen therapy for both pregnant mums and their babies."
Jenny James

Bowen for the whole family

Diagnosed as asthmatic at the age of two months, James was having to use is facial pump up to four times a day. He seemed to have a permanent cold and cough, was wheezing all the time and regularly suffered from croup.  His mother heard about the Bowen Technique, a complementary therapy that involves a series of mainly gentle movements.  After three treatments the wheezing had gone and James no longer needed his pump.  His health inproved dramatically.

That's just one of the many stories I've heard as a Bowen Therapist.  There are many examplesof the therapy making a significant difference across a whole range of conditions, enhancing the lives of the people who are treated and their families.

What Can Bowen do?

The Bowen Technique is one of Europe's fastest-growing complementary therapies.  First developed by Tom Bowen (1916-1982) in Australia , it was brought to Britain in 1993. Bowen studied many forms of remedial bodywork, and other methods of healing, incorparating what he felt was most effective from each into what we now as the Bowen Technique.

There are several theories as to how Bowen works.  Many of the moves made by a Bowen practitioner are on recognised trigger points, accupuncture points and meridians, neurolymphatic reflex points, golgi receptor cells and joint proprioreceptors.  One of the most profound effects Bowen can have is on the automatic nervous system- which controls over 80% of bodily functions- releasing stress at a very deep level.

Bowen has been shown to help woth muscular and skeletal problems such as Arthritis, asthma, hayfever, eczema, migraine, IBS and stress.  It can help babies with colic or clicky hips, young children who have glue ear or earache, who bed-wet, or who suffer from allergies, Croup, Psoriasis or sinusitis, and those who suffered trauma or exhibit behavioural problems such as ADHD.  Several practitioners specialise in helping children affected by Cerebal palsy, Dyspraxia or Autism, with very positive results.

Bowen can support a family during conception, Pregnancy and beyond.  It can help women with breast pain, pre-eclampsia, symphysispubic dysfynction, malposition or malpresentation, perineal discomfort, haemorrhoids or mastitis.

The Treatment.

Using only thumbs and fingers, the Bowen Therapist makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons and soft tissue at precise points on the body.  this effectivly rewrites the message being received by the brain, which then triggers a re-aligning, self-healing response in the body.  The pressure exerted is gauged by the practitioner according to the age and physical condition of the client and can range from very gentle moves for a tiny baby to more robust moves for an athlete with a sports injury.

A treatment normally takes between 45 minutes and an hour and includes periods of rest to allow the body to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.  Some clients become so relaxed that they fall asleep during the session.  Acute injury is is usually resolved in one to three treatments, whilst chronic conditions may require several more.  Many people return regularly for top-up treatments, to boost their feeling of health and wellbeing and to strengthen their immune systems.

Evidance:

While there are individuals all over the country who will pay testimony to the way in which Bowen has madea major difference to their lives, there are areas of conventional medicine which refuse to be convinced-about Bowen and most other natural therapies.

The Bowen Therapist registar (BTER) is the main professional body for practitioners in the UK and inmany European countries.  For several years now, BTER has organised national studies including migraine, asthma and frozen shoulder, to try to provide quantifiable, rather than anecdotal, evidence of the effectiveness of Bowen.

The 2008 study focused on shoulder and neck pain.  Practitioners across the country offered special rates for a series of three treatments- spread over a month to people of varying ages and lifestyles, who suffered from shoulder and neck problems, but never had tried Bowen.  The effects of each treatment were reviewed by the practitioner and the client, and carefully recorded and analysed by BTER.  The results have been spectacular.  They show that of the clients treated, 86% reported a partial to full recovery after a series of three treatments.

Such dramatic evidence wasn't unusual.  The latest project followed two separate studies in 2005 and 2007 into the effects of Bowen on back pain.  These both showed that more than 90% of people treated experienced either complete or significant relief after three treatments. The oldest client was 91 years old and estimated that the condition had improved by at least 80% after three treatments.  One client had suffered from back pain for 53 years: after the third treatment, the client reported an improvement of at least 70%!

"The results of each of our surveys are, of course, based on only three treatments," Bter's Christine Burd comments: "The Bowen therapists involved know that their more mature clients-or clients with chronic conditions-are likely to experience even better results after a number of additional sessions."
